Out of the 30 GFS ensemble members below, 16 of them (53%) have accumulating snow for PARTS of our viewing area a week from Sunday. Eight of those members (27%) have nothing at all, but 7 others (23%) actually have a pretty good thump in the city.
Remember, it can still snow in mild patterns. Last month proved that. And we all know it can also still snow in March. As a matter of fact, some of our biggest snowstorms have actually occurred in March including the Blizzard of ’93. Our seventh largest snowstorm actually occurred in April of all months (19.4″). The key to a good snowfall in March, if the temperatures are borderline here in the Philadelphia area, is to have it fall at night when the sun is down. Obviously the colder the temperatures are, the better the chances are of seeing higher accumulations. But if the temperatures are just borderline cold enough to begin with you need the storm to come in at night. So timing is a big thing this late in the season.
It’s been an incredibly mild stretch of weather for us and next week looks really mild too. So, it’s going to take one heck of a pattern change to make this happen. But I’ve seen crazier things before. We’ll see what happens. It may end up being nothing at all.
